Dental Occlusion

Occlusion in the dentistry world essentially means the contact between the teeth at rest or while biting. Three different flavors exist of occlusion such as malocclusion, static occlusion, and centric occlusion which are differentiated via a bad bite or incorrect clenching of the teeth or when the jaw is stationary.

Very few people have a perfect occlusion or teeth enamel for that matter. Therefore, it is important for the dental professional to determine which malocclusion needs some type of treatment to prevent an occlusion from becoming pathologic. Certain malocclusions have specific common characteristics. Since it is the characteristics of each malocclusion that are treated, it is important to understand the characteristics as thoroughly as possible. This is true no matter what phase of dentistry the clinician attempts to perform. By classifying something, it is easier to communicate certain information to the patients, as well as to other members of the dental profession.
