Dentist Dr
A dentist is in fact not classified as a "doctor" in the sense of being an MD but is considered a doctor when dealing with teeth. The amount of education is slightly less than that of an MD but first they are required to have a full four-year degree and then can become licensed. The term DDS and MD are quite different... whereas you can see it requires a lot more education to become a full body medical doctor vs. just focusing on the gums and teeth.
Just like in the vast medical field, a dentist can choose to enter specialty fields such as an Orthodontist, Endodontist, Peridontist, Prosthodontist, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, and others. Wanting to work with children or young ones could also push a dentist-to-be to become a pediatric dentist. Oral surgery might require a dentist to work side-by-side with a medical doctor because of its nature. Long story short, a DDS is not an MD by classification but can be considered a doctor when it comes to dental care - and it is best practice to see a dentist vs. a dr. regarding your teeth.
